for what it's worth
andy, mike, ray, josh, and others have already posted their "best of 2005" or links to their favs.
while i liked all of those, the best "public" list i've found so far (by "best" i mean the one i agree with) is this one at glide. the gorillas and neil young made the list, the underrated hold steady's album is on there, illinoise and twin cinema made the list (as usual), and--perhaps most importantly--the "let down" albums are fair (even though i like some of those bands).
it just goes to show you...something....
(sufjan reigns again. sorry john. i guess your taste in music is wrong. objectively.)

That's Entertainment Weekly. How much more objective can you get?

Thanks for the link. Enjoyed their list...but also goes further to prove that for a graduate of the venerable University of Michigan School of Music, I am remarkably unhip when it comes to "cool" music. Bah.
Gonna hafta go pick up the new Son Volt record fo' shizzle.
Suggest a debut Sufjan record for me?
Thanks man....
Rich
Sufjan's debut album ain't so good. I would start with Illinois (the most recent album) and then work backwards through Michigan and Seven Swans.
